SAMSON NGUYEN GOT FIRST, HOMES!
Judy Dater - Ansel Adams
There is an old man standing (or possibly sitting) under a tree with his eyes closed. He has a giant smile on his face.
The man kind of looks baked, since his eyes are closed and he seems to be in a euphoric state. However, he is apparently thinking of vivid imagery.
There is an old man under a tree. He is bald and has a white beard.
I chose this picture because it looked really plain and there was not much to look for or think about.
Susan Meiselas - Streetscapes; Lower East Side, New York
There is a young man walking his dog on a sidewalk. The walls are covered with memoirs of the dead.
The year this picture was taken on was 2001, which was the same year 9/11 happened. The memoirs are for those who died during the incident.
There is graffiti all over the walls, and there appears to be a closed, broken down liquor store on the right side of the picture. The mood seems to be depressing and quite passive in a way.
I chose this picture because it stood out to me with all of its vivid colors and detail.
Josef - Untitled
The Rancho family is shown by a wagon.
In 1967, poverty was a very huge problem all over the Americas.
The picture looks very plain in black and white, everything in the background looks very casual. However, the family is portrayed to the viewer as very depressed, and the mood seems harsh.
I selected this picture out of random choice.

*Artist and Title: Aaron Siskind - Feet 1957
* Subject(s)2 feet crossed
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one? Something that i got from this picture was maybe that there was journey that has just been finished and they lay down and rest their feet which are tired to end it.
* Imagery: There is a picture of 2 feet dark and tired
* What made you choose these pictures? I chose this picture because i got a story out of it.
*Artist and Title Ralph Gibson, Untitled
* Subject(s) A man looking out of a window with a outlook of the city.
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one? One man thinks of how the world has changed around him and what is going on now after so many years have passed as if it were only a day.
* Imagery A man staring out a window gloomy feel.
* What made you choose these pictures? It looked like a sad look and it really made you think about the picture itself.
*Artist and Title Neil Folberg Untitled
* Subject(s)Scenery of a lake and a sunset in a city.
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one? The city itself is now calm and serene in itself when the sun slowly sets into the night where a new day will begin in another place in the world.
* Imagery The scenery of the lake and city in calm peace.
* What made you choose these pictures? I chose this picture because it was very calm and nice to look at.
*August Sander, Bricklayer's Mate
*A man working and his job is to hold bricks for construction work.
*Man: I've been working here for 2 months and I already want to leave but I can't because I have no where else to go. One man has already died in the past week and I don't know if I'm next, for I am a fighter and I am strong.
*Imagery: Black and white picture, a man, shoulder full of bricks, dark place, work.
*I choose this picture because it shows a hard worker that is trying his best to be strong and not everybody likes to work at their jobs.
*Alexey Titarcuko, Untiltled(St. Petersberg, Crowd #2)
*A crowd of people going from place to place in a small town. You can't exactly see them well as if it is a ghost town.
*Narrator: There comes a time and place where everybody has to go from one place to another at one time. In this town, it's crowded everyday.
*Imagery: People, stairs, rails, buildings, and it's black and white.
*I choose this picture because it loooked really cool on how you can't see everybody in the picture going from one place to another.
*Annette Fournet-Prague, Czech Republic
*An unknown person in a river or some unknown place as if he was Jesus dieing on the cross.
*Imagery: River, cross, trees, fading things away, and it's black and white.
*Narration: This is a man who has done nothing but good. he has saved many lives and what they give to him in return is nothing. He is a child from God. He is Jesus.
*I choose this picture because it reminded me of my religion because I am a Christian. Otherwise, it looked rather awkward because of the unknown place and an unknown person which stook out to me. I think it's Jesus, actually (but a remake from some other place).
The way I chose all of my pictures was walking around the museum early on during the field trip and picking ones that caught my eye. I wish I would have waited to do ones that really caught my eye.
Untitled - William Shaft
An urban downtown area with tall buildings and busy streets. The focus is on a giant square building in the middle with silver reflecting window panes. The US capitol building was in the reflection on the square building in the middle.
The story was something along big business in America, and how those corporations run our government.
The picture was black and white, there was a very ominous look about the whole figure with that towering building dominating the scene.
The Leg - Max Young
The picture was a giant statue of a female leg on top of a strip club or something like that.
It was taken in 1949, and I could not guess why the photographer took this picture. Maybe if I knew the historical context of the man and the year I could infer something about it.
I really liked the imagery of this picture. The leg was really difficult to see. The background of the picture was pitch black and the leg was a charcoal gray silhouetted against it. It was on top of a glowing round pedestal, which detracted a little bit from the leg.
Feet 119 - Aaron Siskind
This was probably the most simple picture I saw. It was two dark, soft feet against a white background.
I don't think there is any story behind this, it was too simple.
I also really liked the imagery in this picture. At first the toes looked like tiny boulders on top of a larger boulder. When I got closer to the picture I realized what it was. The feet were made to look so soft and boulder-like.
A work in progress- Sally Mann
The picture was taken in March 7, 1989. The picture had a lot of meaning because it was an old man and maybe it was his son and the man was caring the child. The kid had like the spotlight. The picture was all dark but the kid was like the center of attention. Their faces looked like they were sad because they were poor. The subject of the picture was probably dad and son love towards each other. I can identify with the story of the picture because it reminds me of my dad and my brother when my dad and my brother had that kind of relationship. I chose this picture because I think that its nice that a kid and his dad love each other like that it shows a lot of respect and love towards each other.
Picture #2
The model wife
By: Edward Weston oct.22, 2000
This picture was so meaningful because I think that since is a woman and she was totally nude I think that she was hiding with her own body like if she was afraid of something or someone. This image got my eye because I think that since it was only black and white it shows a lot of fear too. I can identify with this image because I had a friend that was rapped and that made her had fear towards guys and that reminded me of her. Because she seems that she was hiding from guys. I chose this picture because I think that it was so pretty by having a woman cover her self with her own body. The main part that I like this picture was that I like the fact that she covers her face with her legs.
Picture # 3
The saint and the market place
By: Masumi Hayashi
This picture was my favorite one because it had a lot of color and it was long with a lot of different satiations in a same picture. I think that it was really nice that it was in India because I think that is a really sad place and that picture is showing that the community is always together and I love that picture for its color and for the way the photographer did only one picture with different stations. I can identify with this picture because I think that it shows that even if the family is poor theirs always love for each other and communication. I chose this picture because I liked all of the image and its colors.eslygalindo
Joel Sternfeld - Joseph, Utah June 1983
The subject is an old truck on a dirt road outside of a Colonial style home. The focus is on the truck, so I believe that it is the main subject.
The story is most likely showing daily or everyday life for a family who works hard; it shows how life was lived in 1983.
The truck (which is vintage) shows age and labor, because it looks like a work truck.
I liked the vintage look with the truck, and the simplicity. I liked how it showed labor or work with the truck, and then you saw simple elegance with the clean house in the background.
Marisol Lopez - Dust to Dust
A girl's feet.
It would seem that the woman whose feet are shown has just died. The title also suggests that she has passed on.
The fact that she still has nail polish on her toenails shows that she just recently died.
I chose this from far away, her feet looked like a heart and that is what originally drew me to look at the photo.
Michael McLoughlin - Contact #C11
It is a rusting wall in a factory.
Maybe the factory or workplace has been closed for a very long time and this is showing how it has weathered and aged with time.
The rust on the wall shows age.
The bright orange color of the rust caught my attention and made me want to really look at the texture of the wall.
The first photograph that jumped out at me was titled “Untitled”, and it was written by Larry Clark. The primary focus of this image was a car, ensnared in foliage, appearing utterly abandoned. Vines had grown into the car, and it seemed they had grown into the very innards of a car. Personally, I saw it as a microcosm for the dystopia that is society. It spoke to me that nature will be all that is left to watch our fall, as we devastate our fellow man, drowning them in metal and fire, stoking the flames of war once, twice, thrice over. I chose this picture because it just…spoke to me. I found it disturbing, yet encouraging at the same time. It echoed that we are not the masters of this world, without us, nature will persist. Unless we eradicate this entire planet, life will be brought forth again. Even within the sarcophagus of Chernobyl, life persists.
The second photo that drew my eye was “Black Octopus”, but Gwen Akin and Adam Ludwig. The focal point of the photo was a strange, almost other-worldly, eight-tentacles creature, and octopus. The octopus was nailed to a wall, rust covered nailed sunken into what appeared to be stone. The force of gravity acting upon the creature was obvious, it could be seen in the way it dangled from is macabre perch. This was a form of anti-thesis to the previous image, it showed that man is perfectly capable of dominating even the most strange, beautiful and reclusive of nature’s creatures. Really, however, I choose it because the image was extremely strange at a distance, and even stranger at closer look.
The third, and final image I chose was called “Downtown L.A. from 600 Bixel St.”, written by John Hamble. The contrast of imagery in this photo was awe-inspiring. The viewpoint of the photo was centered in a heavily urban area. Truthfully, it looked like some sort of slum, the building aged and decaying, cardboard covering windows, paint chipping upon walls and wood worn by sun and exposure to the elements. However, in the near horizon stood a tall monolith of a structure, a large skyscraper fashioned out of reflective material. It seemed a symbol of man’s triumph, and the beauty of architecture, however, the origin of the photographers viewpoint, and the imagery shown of the ‘slum’ really contrasted with this. It, similar to the first photo I chose, exhibited the dystopia inherent in our civilizations. What particularly drew my attention, however, was the initial beauty of the skyscraper, the dominant feature in the picture. However, the flow of the eye falls to the decayed metropolis, inspiring a feeling of…sadness in the viewer’s mind and heart.

Gun #1 by William Klein
* Subject(s)
There is a preteen boy who was pointing a gun at the camera who looked mad and a little boy who was looking up to him.
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one?
I can identify a a story that involves influence in america and how people look up to their elders.
* Imagery
the picture is black and white and the focus is not at the gun pointing at the camera but at the elder boy's face
* What made you choose these pictures?
The expression on the boys face made me choose this picture.
* Artist and Title
san francisco by arthur ollman
* Subject(s)
There is a picture of a lamp light then one of the san francisco bay bridges and a pile of dirt (i think).
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one?
When i first saw it i thought it was like debris from an earthquaake bnut i was wrong. I guess it's a story about san francisco and the lifestyle there.
* Imagery
the light from the lamp post gave it a sepia tone effect to it the focus was on that pile of dirt.
* What made you choose these pictures?
I liked the image it looked pretty cool and it was interesting.
* Artist and Title
Pox Exam by Sally Man
* Subject(s)
The back of a person who has chicken pox
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one?
In my opinion i think it's telling a story of chicken pox and vaccinations. It's very important to get vaccinated.
* Imagery
the focus was pointed towards the bare back of the person. The person was bending forward and all you can see was the spots on the back.
* What made you choose these pictures?
The chicken pox was pretty cool looking. It caught my attention when i first looked at and it was the first picture i picked out of the three.

ALMA SANCHEZ...
1."4 convicts, Folsom prison"- Anthony Fredrick
-There are four convicts standing next to each other in prison. They all look gang related because of all the tattoos that they have on there body. There are some weights in front of them so it seems like they were working out. It seems like the weather is really hot because the sun shining on their face.
-This picture is black and white, it makes it seem more serious.
-I chose this picture because its really intense.
2."In the trenches, Near Kursuk"-Mark Markkou-Grinberg
-There are four men in war and there are in something sort of like a cave, its seemed like they were hiding and ready to aim at the other people. There is a tank on top of that cave.
-This picture is black and white and it shows fear for the men that are in war.
-I chose this picture because it represents the fear that people have when they go to war.
3."Rose, Winterthur"-Thomas Struth
-There is a rose that has not yet bloom. It seemed like it was spring time by the look of the weather.
-This picture is in color. It seems like its all about the beauty of nature. It shows calmness, beauty and nature.
-i chose this picture because it is very pretty and calm.
Artist: Larry Fink
Title: Model, Moses Soyer Studio
Subject: Sad, Depressed, Model, Bulimic? Anorexic?
Imagery: A woman sprawled on the floor with an odd look on her face, an unmade bed, with sheets crumpled every where. A photograph above the bed of the woman. Main focus was the woman.
Why Chosen: There was something about the look on the girls face, she was so sad, her eyes glistened with sorrow.
Narrative: I couldn’t identify a story, so here is the one I created. The woman has been suffering from depression for years, no one notices or cares. She feels lost an invisible in the world, he job is meaningless, she is photographed for consumerism not for beauty or for an impact.
Artist: Ruth Bernhard
Title: Hand in Hand (Mano a Mano)
Subject: Diversity, Friendship, Peace, Love
Imagery: Two people holding hand, only the hands are showing, a black and white photo, one person is African American, and the other is Caucasian. Angle is low and to the right.
Why Chosen: It was just a nice, simple, peaceful photo that was calming to the eye, maybe it didn’t stand out and leave a huge impression at first, but on the long run, it has a lasting impression.
Narrative: I couldn’t identify a story, so here is the one I created. Two children were walking down the street, on opposite sides, to avoid each other, because that was the way it is in that down, but something compelled the little boy to cross the street, maybe it was the little girls cute chubby cheeks, or maybe it was curiosity, either way they crossed the racial boundary and joined hands in peace and love.
Artist: Pok Chi Lau
Title: Tyler Kakeru son of photographer first day as Asian American
Subject: Calm, Fresh, New, Asleep, Baby
Imagery: Baby’s smiling face, with one section of light going across his face.
Why Chosen: Because it was cute, and the baby looked so peaceful, his first day being alive, it just such a miracle.
Narrative: I couldn’t identify a story, so here is the one I created. Pok Chi Lau just endured watching his wife suffer through 36 hours of labor, much screaming yelling and pain. His son was born with a loud cry, and that was it Pok was in love. How could something this amazing, come from a womb? A miracle, really and truly Pok just laid his eyes on the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. He had to record it, to remember this amazing moment, as he took out his camera a piece of light crept through the blinds and shone on to his sons face. This was the proudest moment of his life.

* Artist and Title: “In the Trenches, Near Kursk” - Mark Markon-Grinberg
* Subject(s): Russian soldiers, struggling in ditches
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one?: In my mind, these Russian soldiers were crawling on their elbows, through ditches during the early days of WWII. I can imagine the photographer is making a side-job of documenting the war for his own benefit, and turned around in the tight space to snap the picture which would be seen across the world.
* Imagery: The black and white image portrays fear and determination in the faces of the soldiers.
* What made you choose this picture? : The determination on the faces of the subjects seemed so, undeniably real, it felt, regardless of the grainy resolution, I could feel the fear myself.
*Artist and Title: “San Francisco with Fog Rolling In” - Will Connell
* Subject(s): Urban housing of San Fransisco with clouds of fog rolling in
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one?: The looming clouds foreshadow a dark period in the city.
* Imagery: The houses featured are covered in shadows and the streets are brightly lit, creating extreme contrast between the neighborhood and weather.
* What made you choose this picture?: The texture of the clouds was so vivid, it drew in my eye and made me exam the image closely so I could analyze it more in-depth.
* Artist and Title: “Arial View: Downed Trees- 8 Miles NW of Mt. St. Helens, WA” - Frank Gohlke
* Subject(s): Thousands of trees, cast down as if they were just sticks rather than majestic pines.
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one?: In 1981 Mt. St. Helens erupted, spewing lava, ash and volcanic gases around for miles. The eruption left complete and utter devastation of the surrounding area.
* Imagery: Dreary, Destruction, Tragedy.
* What made you choose this picture?: The perspective of the photographer made the scene even more devastating, as all which was captured was death of a once beautiful forest.

"4 convicts, Folsom prison"- Anthony Fredrick
-The subject of this photograph is about 4 convicts that are in Jail. In the picture they seem to make themselves look tuff and afraid of nothing.
-The picture wouldn’t really make you think that those 4 convicts are regretting what they did; they seemed comfortable where making it seem that they were the ones that had the authority over the rest of the people that were there.
-The picture was black and white so you couldn’t see any color that the photograph had. It made it seem like nothing really existed around them because of the black and white like if everything that surrounded them was dead.
-When I first walked into the museum it was one of the pictures that I had first seen, and it caught my attention just for the simple fact that they were convicts and they had some something bad in their lives, yet they didn’t seem as they had regretted what they had done.
"Rose, Winterthur"-Thomas Struth
-The subject of this photograph is a Rose that has not yet blossomed.
-To me this picture didn’t really have like a story behind it, but then again it seemed as if this photographer had taken this picture for a reason and that reason might have been because of him maybe comparing himself to the rose and how it was not yet blossomed and it was barely starting to form and open up to the world.
-This picture as the others that I chose was not black and white it was color, and I think that it made the picture stand out more from the rest because most of the pictures that were at the museum were black and white while you go and see out of no where this rose and its very beautiful and it makes it look even more beautiful so I think that it represents how colorful our world is.
-The reason I chose this picture was because it catched my attention. I like nature and part of nature are the flowers that grow along with it so like I said before when I saw the picture and the colors it made the picture look more alive.
“In the Trenches, Near Kursuk” -Mark Markkou-Grinberg
- In this picture there were about 4 guys that were at war and they were under a tank it seemed as if they were hiding from the enemies but they were ready for anything that was coming their way.
- In this picture I thought it had a story to it because of course there was a war going on at that time. The people that were in that war most likely had families that they had left behind for this cause so that also actually left a lot of memorable things in this picture.
- This picture was a black in white picture to me this represented like bad times that they were going through and well it also made it seem as if they more at war because it brings bad time.
- What made me chose this picture was in the position that they were in and the expression that they had in their faces about what they were doing and thinking what they were going to do to keep themselves alive. Also the tank they were under was scary because that’s very dangers.

1.) Mulackstrasse 37- Shimon Attie
It’s a chromonegenic print, and it’s about a city part of it in ruins with a black and white picture of two children that seem to be from the time of The Depression.
It was taken in 1961, and I could identify that it was pretty much trying to show how the city looks today all beautiful, but then their are parts still in ruins and the picture of the two children seem to be like if they were living in the streets.
The photograph is mostly all in color but the image of the two children is in black and white, and it’s almost hard to see if you don’t pay close attention.
Well I chose this photograph for the reason that its interesting what they took a photograph of, it was interesting how all the city was in color except that the picture of the children was the only part that was black and white.
2.) Hand in Hand- Ruth Bern Hard
It pretty much is probably about a couple waking together hand in hand or an adult with dark skin taking in his hands a child with light skin.
It was taken in 1905, it’s a photograph in black and white and I could see it was an African American holding the hands of either a women or child that was white skinned.
I chose this photograph because it just interested me and made me remember the time when racism was a big issue and how colored people were separated from whites.
3.) 4 convicts, Flosom Prison- Anthony Friedkin
The photograph is pretty much about four convicts and by seeing the photograph one can assume they were in jail.
It was taken in 1994, and it was provably to show the life of a convict in jail, and how even though they were in jail they would feel powerful.
The photograph is in black and white, by looking at the four men in the picture they were all standing up straight, and it seemed that when the picture was taken the sun was hitting their faces.
I chose this photograph for the reason that I have always wondered why people think it’s correct to kill just because their in gangs, because of skin colors, why they think its right to protect the neighborhood by killing others from other communities, through seeing this photograph it made me remember of these things.
1. Artist and Title: Neil Folberg- Untitled
Subject(s): A scenery of a lake with buildings in the back with the sunset and clouds.
Narrative: I think this image is trying to say that there are many things in life that a person can't appreciate, and so they let time pass by without even realizing it. People don't take the time to take a moment to appreciate the things around them.
Imagery: A peaceful and calming feel. Lots of effects and natural colors.
Why: I chose this picture because it sort of just drew alot of attention from other portraits that had a view or some sort of scenery. The sunset was the main thing that caugh my attention, as well as the clouds moving and reflecting on the lake.
2. Artist and Title: James Fee- Untitled
Subject(s): A man with a blurred out face with arms crossed.
Narrative: I don't really know what this picture is trying to say because it just leaves a mystery. But I think that this man is angry and that he wants to take revenge on something.
Imagery: Sort of a mysterious feel. The canvas is orange and pretty much the only thing on there is the man.
Why: I chose this picture because it was extremely mysterious and I was sort of trying to figure out what this portrait was trying to say, and it actually made me look at it for a while.
3. Artist and Title: Ralph Gibson- Untitled
Subject(s): A man looking out of a window with a view of the city.
Narrative: I think this portrait is trying to say that the world does not wait for anyone, and the world changes but not everyone can keep up with it.
Imagery: The image is in black and white, and I think it's trying to create a gloomy, depressing feel.
Why:I chose this picture because I thought I could relate a bit to it. The world has changed around me, whether it's my friends, family, everything. Nothing was ever the way it use to be, and although they have changed, I still like the way things have become.
Pok Chi Lau- no title
The photography is a baby front face. Well what the photography transmitted me was that it is life that one creates or brings to life for the Asin America people. The baby’s face was half covered by a shadow and half not. The photography was black and white. Well what made me choose this picture is because I saw the baby’s face. In the photography the baby’s face was cover by a shadow half way and in the shadow you could see a sword though I don’t think it is one but it was reflected there. So that’s what catches my attention. :)
Leland Foerster- not title
The photography is a man leaning in the porch of goats and there were goats too. Well what I could tell by the photography is that the man in the photo took care of the goats. The man is facing front wards with a smile and then the goats were rushing by and they were like running at speed of light. The photograph was in white and black. The photo shot was facing the porch and the man as well as the goats. What made me choose this picture were the goats rushing by to get out of the porch in speed of light.
Elleen Cowin- no title
The photograph had a man with his surroundings all black. What the photo transmitted me was that the man was running to something with no goal, meaning, nor sense. The man is trying to find an answer in the wrong direction. The picture was all black and the man was in white walking/running to darkness. The reason why I chose this was because the photograph made me feel that sometimes I’m that person running to something that don’t have and end or a meaning. I can find myself searching for something that doesn’t lead me anywhere. Yeah! :D
Artist: Minor White
Title: Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
Subject: A photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge surrounded by fog, with the sun setting behind it.
Narrative: The story behind this picture could be showing the history of San Francisco because with the Golden Gate Bridge in the middle of the picture, and the sun setting behind it, it shows a historic part of San Francisco.
Imagery: The image is in black and white, which creates clear areas of light and shadows, and the fog adds mystery to it, along with the sun setting in the background makes it more interesting.
Why I choose it: I choose this picture because it struck me as something that looked amazing.
Artist: Eugene de Saligne
Title: Painters on the Brooklyn Bridge Suspender Cables
Subject: The Subject is 10 men hanging, sitting, and hanging out on the suspension cables of the Brooklyn Bridge
Narrative: The story behind this photograph seemed to be that some workers were climbing on the Brooklyn Bridge Suspension Cables, painting them.
Imagery: The image is in black and white, but probably because it is old, although it adds something historic to it. The angle that the photo is taken at also makes the suspension cables look almost like a grid, and it is weird to look at at first.
Why I choose this: I choose this because the picture looked unique, compared to bridges I have seen before.
Artist: Pok Chi Lau
Title: Tyler Kakeru, son of the photographer, First day as an Asian American, Lawrence, KS
Subject: The subject is an up-close picture of an Asian baby’s face.
Narrative: Based on the title of the image I am guessing that the story behind this is the family just moved to America, and so the father wanted to take a picture of his baby.
Imagery: The photo is an up-close shot which provides a lot of detail in the baby’s face. And also black and white which makes it seem calm.
Why I chose this: I chose this photo because it was very simple, even though a lot of detail could be seen, and it struck me.

Photograph 1:
Sunflower - Paul Caponigro (1969)
The only object in the photograph is a sunflower.
Usually sunflowers are bright and bring happy feelings but in the picture most of the flower is covered by shadow. The only parts visible are the leaves and the stem and the only light is around the outside edges of the leaves. The picture shows that everything has a darker side and you can't tell everything about anything just by looking at it once or seeing the outside. What is inside is often hidden.
The photographer takes the picture straight on at the back of the flower, but the shadow still covers mostly everything. It is in black and white.
I chose this picture because it is not how sunflowers are usually seen and I thought it was interesting.
Photograph 2:
Jasmine's Gown - Keith Carter
Jasmine's dress is hung on a nail that is nailed into a plain, dirty wall. Jasmine is not wealthy and the dress is dirty and wrinkled but she used the dress to step into a different world for a night and become a different person. Jasmine's dress shows that anyone can be lovely. Now that the nights is over the dress goes back to not being used and Jasmine goes back to work and her struggles.
Carter took the photo from an angle that makes it seem slightly crooked because only a small portion of the floor shows and only on one side. The dress hangs above an electrical socket. It is all in black and white.
I chose this image because it reminded me of a picture that one of my friends is in, except she is wearing a dress in front of a blank wall and floor.
Photograph 3:
Untitled (from the Courthouse Series) - William Cliff
There is a building that reflects the smaller building in front of in.
It is in the city on a normal day and there are cars driving around.
The picture gives the impression that you are going back in time or going to another place because the main building and all of its surroundings are very modern but the one that is reflected in it looks a lot older.
It is a black and white picture. It seems to be taken straight on from one of the taller buildings that is being reflected. Almost everything is centered.
I chose it because it is an interesting composition because the mirror-like building is not something you see every day and the picture looks as if there is another picture of buildings on top of the city picture.

Picture #1:
Edward Weston-"The Model Wife"
The photograph was taken on October 22, 2000. This photograph catured by attention a lot. It has woman who is nude and is positioned in a very interesting way. Her body was cuddled with her face hiding behind her leg and arm. The expression of it seemed as if the woman had fear of something or someone and was trying to hide herself with her own body. I could identify with this picture because in many situations when children or adults are scared of something they try to hide themselves in their own body.
Picture #2
Sally Man-"A work in Progress"
The photograph was taken on March 7, 1989. It showed a older man holding a child in his arms. The way the photograph was taken expressed that the child was the main focus point because their was a glow effect on the child. In my opinion I think it expressed the love of a single father who has taken care of his son for a while and him trying to give the child anything he can give him. I can't identify with this photograph because I have never seen or experience something like that.
Picture #3
Masumi Hayashi-"The Saint and the Market Place"
This photograph was taken on 2002 in India. Out of all the photographs I saw this was my favorite one and the most eye catching one. It showed a market place in India that had a lot of people in different stations. The people in the picture look busy. I noticed that the photographer took pictures of the market place in many different angles and put them all together into one big picture. The colors were very eye catching. I liked the way it showed a community on a regular day basis trying to get their groceries done.

* Artist and Title: Stephen Shore - 2nd East and South Main st.
* Subject(s): Lonely street in the evening.
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one? : I can see just the ending of ones day and having a quite evening. People are going back to their houses.
* Imagery: Warm colors, buildings and people walking down the street.
* What made you choose these pictures? : I chose this picture because the lighting was perfect and the color scheme was easy on the eyes.
* Artist and Title: Mark Markov – In the Trenches
* Subject(s): Soldiers during war.
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one? : I could see the soldiers fearing for their lives and hoping they will survive this inferno which is the war.
* Imagery: The picture was black and white and showed 4 soldiers hiding in a trench with a tank riding up above. We can see the fear in the soldiers face.
* What made you choose these pictures? : I chose this picture because it looked dramatic and the way the picture came out and it made me wonder what a photographer was doing in a battle scene.
* Artist and Title: Masami Hayashi – The Saint and the Market
* Subject(s): Indian Marketplace
* Narrative? Could you identify a story? If not, could you create one? : I see a busy market with families surrounding stores.
* Imagery: Collage of Indian market. Picture is divided in many little squares showing different aspects of one spot. Very colorful and eye catching.
* What made you choose these pictures? : I chose this picture because it was very big(widescreen across wall) and had lots of detail to look at. You had to look closely to see that every square was different but from far away you saw “the big picture”.
DANIEL KIM
Walker Evans - A Miner's Home
There are random things inside of what seems to be a shack. Some of those things are posters that advertise Coca-Cola, a rocking chair, and a carpet.
There is no person in the photograph, and I think that the photographer was trying to get the point across that not only was the person poor, but was content with living with the things he had. The area and price isn't his home, but the items that have sentimental value make his home, a home.
The picture is in black and white. The feel of the photograph was poor, but homely and welcoming.
Jules Greenburg - Fallen IV
The photograph is a picture of the bottom third of a bird. The birds legs are wrapped together with a thin rope and on that thin rope is a label. The label labels the species of the bird.
The bird in the picture is a very pure white color with gross brown legs. The label has scribbled handwriting in ink.
The story behind this picture is probably hunting season. I think that birds are hunted in the fall, and when they die, they fall. I think that's why the title is called "Fall IV."
Mark Klett - Rose Rider
This photo has a plastic cowboy, probably made from the same material as the green army men. The cowboy is in a state of riding a bull, but in this case, it's a rose. The rose is blurred out.
I think that the story behind this picture is that the rose is a wild flower, which is why a cowboy is "riding" it. I don't understand why the rose is blurred out, maybe to focus on the cowboy more.
The imagery used in this picture is a gray scale and some blurring techniques. The gray scale makes the white cowboy pop out more.
Alexy Titavenko-Untitled (St. Petersburg)
There are some stairs and rails and the people walking are all blurry.
Well there are people but you can't make out there faces, just their hands really since they are blurry.
Well I think Alexy Titavenko might have being trying to say that you are very rushed when you live in the city, always trying to get from place to place.
Well I chose this picture because I thought it was pretty neat and stood out.
Masami Hayashi-I don't remember what it was called
This picture or collage is of and indian market place in a temple.
The subjects are the comsumers and merchants throughout the market place.
The picture its self is just an ordinary picture, but the way it was presented is what makes it unique. Different shots were put together to make one giant picture like collage. The picture was also very colorful and lively.
Nathan Lerner-I don't know what this one is called either
This is a picture of a man lying face down underwater.
You can't see the mans expression but he kind of looks dead.
This picture is pretty depressing looking and makes me think of someone trying to commite suicide.
I'm not really sure why I picked this picture but pretty much it made me kind of sad.

PICTURE #1
Title/Artist: Twelve Sunflowers in a Vase by Vincent van Gogh
Subject(s): It's a vase...full of twelve flowers.
Narrative: I believe that Mr. Gogh was trying to tell us, as the audience (through his picture), that it is possible to fit twelve sunflowers in one vase. The larger message within van Gogh's piece is that anything is possible with art. Thy sky's the limit, even if it's attempting to fit twelve sunflowers in one vase.
Imagery: The quality looks like the doing of a 5 year old. I feel that van Gogh had the potential to do better.
Why choose this picture: I chose it because it is one of the most famous pieces from van Gogh even though it is so simple to create.
PICTURE #2
Title/Artist: The Scream by Edvard Munch
Subject(s): There is a ghoulish looking person standing on a pier holding his ears and having a shocked look on his face.
Narrative: This picture looks like a person is holding his ears and screaming because he is hearing a loud piercing noise. As a matter of fact, that's exactly what this picture is about: a guy is plugging his ears because of a loud noise.
Imagery: The entire picture looks blurred, but I think that it was drawn like that on purpose because when you hear a loud deafening noise, your vision tends to blur.
Why choose this picture: I chose this picture because the man on the pier looks like a zombie from a game I used to play called Zelda.
PICTURE #3
Title/Artist: Autumn
Subject(s): All it is, is paint spattered on a canvas.
Narrative: I think that this abstract piece shows the pattern of the person who threw the paint on the canvas. The spattered paint doesn't look random.
Imagery: Splattered paint =]
Why choose this picture: It looks creative because of the way the white, black and tan colors blend.

* What made you choose these pictures?
Josef Sudek- Sunday Afternoon on Kolin Island
The subject is a sunday gathering in the park.
Three men in the center were mainly in focus, they were enjoying the sunday afternoon.
The image was in black and white and was very soft. It was also very small, everything was a bit dark, except for the 3 men that it was focused on.
I chose this image because it reminded me of just relaxing and enjoying life.
Mark Klett- Roserider
The subjuct is a toy cowboy "riding" a rose like a horse.
The cowboy could have been placed there by a child that was playing; utilizing anything as a plaything.
This image was in black and white and the man is in focus but the flower is not.
I chose this image because it was comical and not as serious as some of the other images in the gallary so it stood out.
Frank Scavullo- Janis Joplin
The subject in the photo is Janis laughing and pointing.
You could tell she had had a few drinks and was sharing a laugh with a few friends.
This photo was in black and white with her face slightly of center. Her pointing hand was in focus but her face was not.
I chose this image because it was of Janis Joplin, duh.
Danny Lyon – Crossing the Ohio
A man riding on a motorcycle over a bridge and is looking back.
I can see the man running away from a police chase because from the look of the picture it looks like he is going really fast and trying to run away from something.
Black and white colors and worried attitude.
I chose this picture because it looked cool because of the black and white colors and the feeling I got from the picture because it looked like he was running away from a cop or something.
James Fee- David Lynch
An old man standing up and his face is blurry.
I can’t see an image because he’s just standing there. I would say that when he was taking the picture he was moving his head a lot, which is probably the reason why his face looks all blurry in the picture.
The face is blurry and a different colors like his shirt color and the background color, solemn.
I chose this picture because of how the man’s face was blurry and how serious the picture was too.
Masumi Hayash- The Saint and the Market Place
A market place full of people and all of them are serious and looking at the camera.
I don’t think I can, but maybe they were buying stuff and someone came and said to get ready to take a picture so they all paused and took a picture in a serious way.
The picture was really big and it was in a form of tiles and there was a lot of colors and people as well. Serious
The reason I chose this picture was because of the style it had which was tile. Also because of the colors and the market place with people buying things and the culture that they live.

Bart Cordero
Untitled (St. Petersburg Crowd #2)
In this photo there is a staircase and a rail and the people walking up and are all blurry.
There are people but just their hands on the rail.
They are being rushed when you live in the city.
Well I chose this picture because it was amazing how the photographer got it so that one side was filled with people.
Title/Artist: Twelve Sunflowers in a Vase by Vincent van Gogh
Subject(s): It's a vase full of twelve flowers.
Narrative: i'm not sure but im thinking that he was trying to say that anything is possible with a canvas and imagination.
Imagery: We'll it looks like a little kid had painted with his fingers. Maybe he could have done a better job.
Why choose this picture: Well mostly because it might look simple but it seems like you can have a good conversation about it.
Title/Artist: Autumn
Subject(s): Basically it looks like paint thrown at the canvas.
Narrative: Although the paint looks like it was splattered everywhere it look like he had it all planned out.
Imagery: Splattered paint all across the canvas
Why choose this picture: Well i've seen these paintings before but not like this before.

'edge of orange grove sink' this photo was taken under water it has a lot of blues and greens. I think this photographer likes the wilderness and they are just trying to tell a story about the wild and how things in nature work.
I chose this picture because i like the out doors and I just thought this said a lot about what I like to do.
Mark Markov- taken in 1943
'in the trenches'
this picture was taken at and angle where you are in the trench, and you are looking up and seeing this tank right above you. I really enjoyed this black and white photo because it showed what the men and women went through during the war.
I feel this piece spoke out agaisnt the war because it showed everyone how dangerous the war was.

taken in 2001 'David Lynch'
this picture is pretty plain. it has a man in the bottom center whos head is shaking and so it looks like his head is blurred. all behind him is and orange background but not a solid orange. it has chunks of gray lighter oranges in it too. this one was actually my favorite because i couldn't figure out what the artist was saying but i just liked the simplicity of it and how it looked. i don't see any story behind it but then again i don't understand what it represents either.

I wasn't at the field trip :(
but here are three photos
1.http://flickr.com/photos/jasonshogreen/1106528669/sizes/l/in/set-72157601420392165/
2.http://www.pittecp.org/schools/mountaineering/site/images/Burning%20Monk.jpg
3.http://www.bibi.org/box/2005/marco/Mary_Ellen_Mark.jpg
1. The author is my favorite artist, Jason Shogreen. He isn't a photographer, but a drawer/painter. I really like this photo though. There are these flowery mushroom thingies in this foggy meadow. I can't really think of a story to put behind these mushroom things, but I think Jason and his friends were on a hike in Mt. Rainier when he took it.
2. The second one is by Malcom Browne, taken in 1963 during the Vietnam war. It's of the monk (Thich Quang Duc) who burned his self as a social protest against the persecution of Buddhist monks. This picture struck me because I had seen it before when we were learning about censorship and the Vietnam war. It's so horrible and brilliant that someone could burn their self for their beliefs.
3.The third one is by Mary Ellen Mark, and I found this one online, just looking for another photos. Its of two girls head to head, with their arms up. It kind of reminded me of the photo in Paul's class of the two people. The girls in the photo look like they're connected. I chose this photo because I thought it was cute and clever.
1.)Tittle:Model Tin Shed
The black car was all alone in the streets because it was is in no use. Nobody wanted drive that old car.The car was all alone, People didn't looked at it.
I chose that photo because you can tell that the black car is very old.
2.)Untitled
A happy family were going to a vacation when all of a sudden the driver got out of control on a curve and roll over. The car was so damaged that the family died.
I chose that photo because it looks sad and the car looks as if it was hit really hard.
3.)Dust To Dust
The young women was killed in a car accident her family all crying for what happened to her. she was so sweet to everyone thankful she is going to heaven.
I chose photo because because I like how the feet's are like a heart and you can tell that she burly died having still nail polish.

CANDY MARTINEZ - 3 PICTURES
1. Model Moses Soyer Studio by LArry Fink. This picture was taken in 1957 it was to record human behavior or lifestyles. Also to show the person's personality. The lady in the picture looks like a hard worker and very tired. She has a look in her face like she feels out of it. This lady looks relieved and as if she was taking a break. The things in this picture are dancing photos, newspaper, shes wearing a wedding ring, glasses on the floor, a couch, carpet, and the walls. The image was a black and white the lighting was dark at the bottom and bright at the top. The picture angle was from the side and it was printed in gelatin silver print.
2. Nude London by Bill Brandt. This was taken in 1956 in a room. This picture was to show insecurity and a lady's body. It showed the lady completely nude. She had her arms around her stomach, her boobs were showing and she had a sad look in her face. The photo gave me a sad depressing and emotionally confused vibe. This picture doesn't have that many objects. The only thing is a wall behind the lady and the lady herself. The image is black and white. The light is bright in her body and darker in the wall liek if it was a shadow. The picture angle is from the bottom up.
3. 4 convicts Folsom Prison by Anthony Friedkin. This picture was taken in 1991 in a prison. This image was taken to show inmates in a prison. To show what they do and where they come from. I got the impression that they come from the streets. It looks like they don't care about anything. They look like there careless and they feel confident, strong, and secure in the environment there in. The objects in this image are a lift weight a rusty wall behind them and 4 prisoners. The prisoners and jeans, belts, tattoos except for one, mustaches, and one with sunglasses. The image was black and white its all bright as if it was a sunny day. But the walls are a little dark because the walls have dirt. The angle of the picture is straight ahead.
